A JPEG saved at quality 100 is barely smaller than uncompressed, yet at quality 80 the difference is usually invisible to the eye — so most of an image's weight can be removed with no real loss. This tool re-encodes your picture to JPEG or WebP inside the browser; the file is never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions
What quality should I use for the web?
For typical web photos, quality 70 to 80 is a good balance of size and appearance. Above 90 the file grows quickly with little visible gain.
Does re-compressing a JPEG restore quality?
No. JPEG is lossy: every re-save discards more detail and there is no way back. Always start from the original, high-quality file.
WebP or JPEG?
At the same quality WebP is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG and keeps transparency — but note that converting a transparent PNG to JPEG fills the background with white.
Why was my output sometimes larger than the original?
If the image is already compressed and optimised, re-encoding can increase its size. The tool warns you when this happens; lower the quality or keep the original.
