Data Size Converter
Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB and TB.
About Data Size Converter
Much of the confusion around file sizes and disk space comes from one simple disagreement: hardware makers count a kilobyte as 1000 bytes while operating systems use 1024. This tool lets you switch between those two conventions so you can see exactly where the discrepancy comes from.
How to use Data Size Converter
- 1
Enter a value and its source unit.
- 2
Equivalents in every unit are computed instantly.
- 3
Toggle the SI option to move the base from 1024 to 1000 and watch the figures change.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
The manufacturer defines a terabyte as 1000 to the fourth power bytes while Windows divides that same capacity by 1024 to the fourth. No space is missing — these are simply two different units.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KiB is exactly 1024 bytes; KB, by standard, is 1000. The KiB, MiB and GiB units exist precisely to remove this ambiguity, though everyday speech rarely uses them.
Which base applies to bandwidth?
Network speed is normally quoted in bits per second, base 1000. Remember eight bits make a byte, so a 100 Mbit connection tops out around 12.5 MB per second.
