HPE Smart Array P420i AROC 2-Port RAID

The HPE Smart Array P420i AROC 2-Port RAID installs in HPE ProLiant Gen8 servers and provides 2 ports. This is a hardware RAID controller: the array is built on the card itself and the operating system only sees a logical drive. The 512MB / 1GB FBWC cache with its battery/capacitor backup means in-flight writes survive a power cut — exactly what software RAID cannot give you. A compatibility detail that costs money to get wrong: an AROC card (which mounts in the board’s dedicated slot) and a PCIe card are not interchangeable, and each generation has its own AROC slot.
