Common Slot and Flex Slot do not interchange

Gen6 to Gen8 servers use Common Slot supplies; Gen9 onwards use Flex Slot. Their dimensions and connectors differ, and confusing them means a part that will not go in the bay. Compatible generations are printed on every supply’s label, and we state the same on each product.

How many watts is enough?

A typical dual-socket server with 8 to 12 drives draws roughly 400 to 600 W at full load; 800 W covers most configurations with safe headroom. With a processor above 200 W or a GPU, move to 1400 W or higher. An oversized supply does not consume extra power — it simply runs away from its efficiency sweet spot.

Both supplies should be the same wattage

Fit two supplies of different wattage and the server warns in iLO and does not treat the redundancy as guaranteed — because if the larger one fails, the smaller may not carry the full load. So when one dies, its replacement must match the wattage, not merely be “another PSU”.

Frequently asked questions

Can a power supply be swapped with the server running?

Yes, provided two are fitted and the healthy one can carry the load alone. ProLiant supplies are hot-plug: press the latch, slide the unit out and seat the new one. With only one supply, pulling it means the server shuts down.

What difference does a Platinum rating make?

A Platinum rating means roughly 94% of the input power reaches the server and the rest becomes heat. Against an 85% unit, on a 500 W server that is about 450 kWh saved per year — and more important than the electricity bill is the heat your rack cooling no longer has to remove.
