RJ45 or SFP+?
RJ45 runs on ordinary copper with no separate module — the simplest route to ten gigabit over short distances. SFP+ needs a module, but draws less power, runs cooler, and is the only option for long runs and fibre. One important caveat: some switches accept only their own branded modules, so check before buying one.
FlexibleLOM keeps your PCIe slots free
A FlexibleLOM card sits in the board’s dedicated slot, which leaves your PCIe slots available for a GPU or a storage controller. A PCIe card does not fit a FlexibleLOM slot, or the other way round. In a 1U server with only two or three PCIe slots, that distinction decides the build.
Two ports means redundancy, not automatically double speed
A dual-port card can be configured for redundancy (one fails, the other carries on) or for more bandwidth with LACP. The second mode also requires configuration on the switch side; without it, traffic uses a single port only. And even with LACP a single TCP connection is still bound to one port — the real gain appears when you have many concurrent connections.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need for 10 gigabit?
Three things: a 10 Gb adapter in the server, a switch with 10 Gb ports, and the right medium — Cat6a cable for RJ45, or a module plus fibre (or a DAC cable) for SFP+. If any one is missing the link simply negotiates down to a lower speed, with no error shown.
Will a 25 Gb card work with a 10 Gb switch?
Yes. An SFP28 card with a 10 Gb SFP+ module works against a 10 Gb switch and negotiates at that speed. Which means you can buy a 25 Gb card today and reach 25 later by upgrading only the switch — and used 25 Gb cards often cost no more than 10 Gb ones.
